The word Emmanuel means God With Us, the extraordinary promise that there is no person, place or context beyond the presence of God. “Emmanuel” also has the same meaning and pronunciation in virtually every language on earth—a beautiful indication that the gospel is for all of us, equally. Regardless of who we are, where we come from, or what we’ve done, we are all freely invited to experience the nearness of God in our life and worship.

Grace of Weakness

Sing His Love
Father long before creation
Thou hadst chosen us in love
And that love so deep so moving
Draws us close to Christ above
Still it keeps us still it keeps us
Firmly fixed in Christ alone

And the world will sing His love
Yes the world will sing His love
And we'll all join hands
Every woman every man
And sing His love
We'll sing His love

Though the world may change its fashion
Yet our God is ever the same
His compassion and His covenant
Through all ages will remain

God's own children God's own children
Must forever praise His name
God so love us God so loved us
That His only Son He game

God's compassion is my story
It is my boasting all the day
Mercy free and never failing
Moves my will directs my way

Invitation to Worship

We gather in response to God’s gracious invitation, not because worship earns favor with him.

Leader: The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;
People: for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
Leader: Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
People: Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!
~Psalm 24:1-2, 9-10

I will build my house
Whether storm or drought
On the rock that does not move
I will set my hope
In Your love O Lord
And Your faithfulness will prove

You are steadfast steadfast

By the word You spoke
All the starry host
Are called out by name each night
In Your watchful care
I will rest secure
As you lead us with Your light

I will not trust in the strength of kings
On Your promise I will stand
I will shout for joy I will raise my voice
Hallelujah to the Lamb

In the moment of emptiness all was fulfilled
In the hour of darkness Your light was revealed
In the presence of death Your life was affirmed
In the absence of holiness You are still God

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. 9What gain has the worker from his toil? 10I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. 12I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; 13also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.
~Ecclesiastes 3:1-13

Leader: This is the word of the Lord, completely true and given to us in love.
People: Thanks be to God.

scripture reading

The public reading of the Scriptures reminds us of the truth that can only be found in God’s Word.

36One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” 41“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
~Luke 7:36-50

God of mercy, you are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak your eternal Word that does not change. Give us the grace to live out your promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The sermon is a time to hear God's Word explained and applied. Sermons at Emmanuel encourage us to depend on the finished work of Christ rather than self- reliance or self-justification.
Dr. Skip Ryan

The offering is our grateful acknowledgement of trust and worship of the God who owns everything and withholds nothing. If you give online, consider contributing a dollar or loose change as a tangible act of worship.

Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing
Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Confession of Sin

Since we are forgiven in Christ, confession is an honest word of grace and not an exercise in shame.

O Lord, You who are all merciful, take away our sins and kindle within us the fire your Holy Spirit. Take away the heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh and blood, a heart to love and adore you, a heart which may delight in you, love you, and please you, for Christ’s sake. Amen.
~Ambrose of Milan

We are forgiven in Christ! Using the words of Scripture reinforce that our assurance is based on God’s declaration and promises.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
~Psalm 145:8-9

This is the Lord’s table, not Emmanuel’s, and is open to all who have a sincere faith in Jesus and have joined themselves to the visible body of Christ. The Lord’s Supper isn’t simply a memorial, but is also a time of real grace imparted and received in union with God.

The Blessing
The Lord bless you
And keep you
Make his face shine upon you
And be gracious to you
The Lord turn his
Face toward you
And give you peace

May his favor
Be upon you
And a thousand generations
And your family
And your children
And their children
And their children

May his presence
Go before you
And behind you
And beside you
All around you
And within you
He is with you
He is with you

In the morning
In the evening
In your coming
And your going
In your weeping
And rejoicing
He is for you
He is for you

He is for you
He is for you

Benediction literally means “good word.” It is a pronouncement of grace and blessing as we are sent, that we would live out the Christian life solely because God is with us.

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. ~Numbers 6:24-26
After the service, a male and female leader of Emmanuel will be available by the stage to pray for any concerns you have.
Unless noted, all Scripture is English Standard Version (ESV). ▪ CCLI #3184477
